Cerebral Palsy Treatment And Common Symptoms

Cerebral palsy is described as a group of disorders that occur during the developing stages of the brain. It can be caused by a defect or an injury to the brain. It can also be caused by certain types of infections and it can occur before or after birth. CP is a condition that affects movement, a person’s learning abilities, their sight, hearing and even their thinking process. Cerebral palsy treatments play a big role in improving a person's quality of life when afflicted with this disease.

The symptoms of cerebral palsy will vary with each individual and will depend on the severity of the brain damage. This is not a progressive medical condition but the symptoms can get worse with time depending on which part of the brain is affected. In mild cases, the child may not need any special assistance getting through the day. They may simply appear a little awkward, move slower or have difficulty moving and speaking or completing simple task but they can usually still manage to do things on their own.

A child with a severe case of cerebral palsy will need constant care for the rest of their life. They may be confined to a wheelchair and not even be able to feed themselves, much less take care of any other normal everyday task. It is important to be able to spot the signs of cerebral palsy. The sooner cerebral palsy treatment starts the better.

Some of the most common symptoms associated with cerebral palsy are listed here:

• Unusually slow growth pattern

• Abnormal walk

• Muscle and joint tightness

• Muscle weakness

• Abnormal movements

• Tremors

• Poor coordination

• Trouble sitting, standing or rolling over

• Seizures

• Hearing and vision impairment

• Speech impairment

• Difficulty swallowing

Some of the complications that can accompany CP include tooth decay, learning disabilities, gastrointestinal dysfunction and sensory deficits. Of course, the degree of these symptoms will be determined by the extent of damage the brain has sustained.

There is no cure for the disease but there are a number of different cerebral palsy treatments available. The ones used will depend on the type of CP (athetoid cerebral palsy, spastic cerebral palsy or ataxic cerebral palsy) a person has and how serious their condition is. Physical therapy is the most common treatment used for all types of cerebral palsy and different types of therapy will be used depending on which type of CP the person has.

Speech, behavioral and occupational therapy is used to help patients learn how to cope with their disabilities. Some patients may also need braces or other mechanical aids to help them with their impairments. In some cases, medications are used to help control the muscle spasms and seizures caused by CP. Counseling is always recommended for both the patient and the family to help them deal with this condition. Whatever treatment is used, it’s important for the whole family to be a part of it for the best results.

The earlier cerebral palsy treatment begins the more they can help the patient, which is why early detection is so important. If you suspect your child may have cerebral palsy, talk to your health care provider as soon as you can. It is possible for many people with CP to live a fairly normal life when their symptoms are detected early and managed properly.
